CSIRO is Australia's leading research agency with approximately 6,500 staff. CSIRO's research portfolio encompasses projects undertaken specifically for companies, complemented by longer-term strategic research. Typically projects are undertaken by CSIRO alone or in collaboration with company researchers, cooperative company ventures through organisations such as the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) and the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), and through universities and groups of researchers brought together under the Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs).

CSIRO research in the core capability area of CFD modelling commenced in the early 1980's with the first Australian group in this field of science. Much of CSIRO's research in the field of CFD is to assist the Australian mineral processing and power generating industries in their design of more efficient processing plant by providing mathematical models of multi-phase fluid systems. CSIRO's CFD modelling capabilities have achieved rapid and widespread industry acceptance through the adoption of a strong focus on industrial applications and have contributed to the design of new and improved processes.
