Accessibility

The redesigned FLAIR website incorporates improved accessibility features.  Added accessible design elements include:

• Variable text sizing of the pages
• A compact header and footer to allow users to easily distinguish and navigate page content
• The use of "accesskeys" to provide keyboard shortcuts for important navigation options. The following accesskeys are provided:
  • Alt 0 provides a shortcut to the FLAIR home page
  • Alt 1 provides a shortcut to the Monash home page
  • Alt 2 provides a shortcut to search the Monash staff directory
  • Alt 3 provides a shortcut to the Monash site map
  • Alt 4 provides a shortcut to the Monash A-Z index of key web pages

To use the accesskeys, hold down the alt key [Mac users: control key] and press the relevant number key. Note: accesskeys work in a limited number of browsers. In Internet Explorer, you may need to press enter after using the accesskey. In Mozilla, Netscape 6+, and Opera 7+ the link should be automatically activated.

Images

We have decided to use blank alt attributes where images are used only for decorative or layout purposes, including photographs of people. Text equivalents have been provided where images contain content.  Please contact us if you would like us to revise this approach.

Page Layout

Tables have been replaced by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for page layout, in line with contemporary web design trends. The use of Cascading Style Sheets has resulted in a reduced size of page .html files, and a more streamlined visual appearance.

Structural markup

Throughout the site, structural markup has been used. Page headings and sub-headings are indicated by the use of the header elements h1, h2, h3 etc. Important items have been highlighted with the use of strong or em, and lists have been marked up using ul and li.

Scripting

This site makes use of Java scripting for non-essential features such as the display of dates on the footer, and filtering of publication data.
